Based on recent industry notifications, testing data, and consumer surveys, the current hot topics regarding melamine tableware in Europe, the US, and globally mainly focus on the following core aspects:

  1. Exceeding Chemical Migration Limits and Frequent Export Notifications

This is currently the most concerning compliance issue in international trade. Recently, the EU's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has frequently reported non-compliance of melamine tableware . The main issues include:


· Exceeding Formaldehyde and Melamine Migration Limits: Multiple batches of melamine spoons, plates, etc., have been denied entry or destroyed due to formaldehyde or melamine migration levels exceeding EU limits.

· Primary Aromatic Amine Migration: Some food contact materials have been withdrawn from the market or recalled due to excessive primary aromatic amine migration.

· Missing Compliance Documents: Some products have been detained or destroyed by authorities for lacking appropriate accompanying import documents.


2. Continuous Tightening and Upgrading of Regulatory Standards
The safety requirements for melamine products in the European and American markets are constantly increasing:

· Proposed Lowering of Limits: The EU plans to further reduce the melamine migration limit from the current 2.5 mg/kg to 1.5 mg/kg.

· New Testing Items: In the future, microplastics and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFCs) may be included in mandatory testing.

· Domestic Standard Updates: China has also implemented a new national standard (GB 4806.7-2023), adding key safety indicators such as "total migration of primary aromatic amines" to control the carcinogenic risks caused by colorant decomposition and adhesive residues.


3. Misuse of Inferior Raw Materials and Safety Hazards of "Toxic Bowls"
There are continuous controversies over the safety of melamine tableware in the market, with inferior products causing widespread concern:

· Inferior Alternative Materials: To cut costs, some unscrupulous merchants use toxic "urea-formaldehyde resin (UF)" or non-food-grade materials (such as A1 or A3 grades) to pass them off as qualified melamine resin (MF).

· Risks of Highly Filled Materials: Some products contain an excessively high proportion of inorganic fillers like calcium carbonate. This not only reduces the toughness of the tableware but may also lead to a high ash content, triggering export compliance risks in Europe and the US.

· Excessive Heavy Metals: Overly colorful tableware may exceed heavy metal (e.g., lead, cadmium) migration limits due to the use of industrial dyes.


4. Consumer Misuse and Physical Wear Issues
Beyond the production side, consumer usage habits are also a global focal point of discussion:

· Misuse of High Temperatures and Acidic Media: A large number of consumers lack safety awareness and illegally microwave melamine tableware or use it to hold hot oils and highly acidic foods, leading to accelerated release of harmful substances.

· Severe Physical Wear: Surveys show that the vast majority of consumers find numerous scratches, cracks, or even chips on the surface of the tableware during use. These physical damages destroy the dense protective layer on the surface, making it easier for harmful substances to leach out.


5. Environmental Protection and the Trend of Green Material Alternatives
With the rise of safety and environmental awareness, the industry is exploring safer alternatives.
